Peeling asparagus can be frustrating. If you lay it flat on a work surface, your knuckles scrape the surface as you peel, and if you lift one end of the spear to make some clearance, the pressure from the peeler sometimes snaps the spear. Instead, try holding the spear by its tip and laying the rest of it on an overturned saucepan. The pan provides knuckle clearance and at the same time supports the spear against breakage.

I used to have the same problem, my solution was to change the way I hold the peeler. Rather than grabbing it, I hold it with my finger tips, the clearance issue is solved and I find I have a better control. By supporting the end of the spear on the edge of the sink I have more pressure there and remove more material where it is toughest. The peels fly into the sink for easy cleanup.
