If bacon makes everything better, then candied bacon makes it better still. Lemon juice plus toasty hazelnuts help to balance the sweetness of the bacon and the squash. For a simpler, more casual variation of this recipe, try the胡桃南瓜with Kale and Dried Cranberries

  • 1/2 cup chopped hazelnuts

  • Mix the allspice, coriander, paprika, and 1 tsp. salt in a small bowl. On a large rimmed baking sheet, toss the squash with 2 Tbs. of the oil and the spices; spread in a single layer. Roast, stirring once about halfway through, until browned and tender, 22 to 25 minutes.
  • Meanwhile, bring a large pot of salted water to a boil. Have ready a bowl of ice water. Add the kale to the boiling water and cook until tender, about 3 minutes. Drain and transfer to the bowl of ice water. Drain well and pat dry with paper towels.

  • Add the kale and garlic and cook, stirring occasionally, until the kale and garlic are coated. Season with salt and pepper. Garnish the squash and kale with the bacon and hazelnuts, and serve.

    I didn't have strip bacon, so I took my bag of bacon crumbles and mixed it by hand with 4 Tbsp brown sugar and spread out on a baking sheet in the oven at 400 for about 10 minutes to cook/glaze. We left off the nuts due to allergies and was still fantastic.
