Smoked Earl Grey Hot Toddy

Yield:Makes 1 cocktail

Adding an aromatic tea to a hot toddy gives it an extra dimension of warmth and complexity. If you can get smoked Earl Grey, the effect is insane, but regular Earl Grey is great as well. Adding a small taste of an amaro like Averna goes really well here and adds a bit of depth to the drink.

This recipe is excerpted fromTwenty Dinners. Read ourreview.

Ingredients

  • 1 heaping Tbs. honey
  • 2 to 3 lemon slices
  • 5 whole cloves
  • 1 cinnamon stick
  • 1 cup smoked Earl Grey tea (still hot)
  • 2 fl. oz. brandy, rye, or bourbon
  • 1/4 fl. oz. amaro, such as Averna (optional)

Preparation

  • Warm a mug by filling it with boiling water and letting it sit for a few minutes. Pour out the water. To the bottom of the mug, add the honey, lemons, cloves, and cinnamon. Pour in the hot tea, stir until the honey is fully dissolved, then pour in the brandy and the amaro (if using). Continue stirring until it is the right temperature for you. Best served in front of a fire or while fresh snow is falling.

So delicious and comforting! Used Lady Gray for the tea, brandy for the liquor, and Campari for the amaro. Seems very versatile and I'll play around with this a lot depending on flavor mood.

This was delicious. I didn't have any smoked Earl Grey or amaro, so regular Earl, plus some apricot brandy that I had sitting around. I am sure my version was more fruity than intended, but it was still a very comforting, cozy drink.
